There is a growing recognition of the value of mediation as a process for resolving conflict. Whether the conflict is between landlords and tenants, employees, separating marriage partners, neighbors, or people in other kinds of contractual relationship with each other, mediation is beginning to be recognized as worth trying. It is our intention to address power, gender, and cultural issues in the process of mediation.
Rather than viewing conflict as resulting from a situation of dysfunction that can be corrected, we begin with a recognition of the existence of differences between people. We believe people differ not only in the real conditions and opportunities of their lives but also in the stories they draw on to make sense of these differences. Thus, conflict can be understood as the inevitable result of the articulation of difference.
The attempt to understand conflict in our view focuses on language as it shapes our sense of who we are and what our needs are. From this perspective, the differences between us that from time to time lead us into conflict are not necessarily to be resolved but understood. The valuing of difference is a principle highlighted by our approach as we believe that agreements work best in the context of increased mutual understanding. In this way we help people to develop agreements, review them and put them into action leading to more harmonious and enjoyable relationships.
Fees will be determined after reviewing the invitations we receive for our mediation services and they can range from $30.00 to $70.00.
